Toto Wolff confirms Mercedes already shifted to 2027 development

Mercedes has established a commanding 145-point lead at the top of the Formula 1 constructors’ standings, prompting team principal Toto Wolff to label the gap a “nice buffer” as the Silver Arrows pivot their primary design focus toward the 2027 season.

Switching Resources to the 2027 Challenger

Wolff revealed that the transition toward developing next year's car began prior to the mid-season break.

“2027 started a while ago, before the summer,” Wolff explained. “Summer we switched resources into next year and that continues as per the plan independent of where we're standing in the championship.”

While Ferrari faces a massive point deficit and McLaren looks to maintain momentum after two race wins from Lando Norris, closing the gap remains a formidable challenge.

Staying Grounded Despite Title Cushion

Despite holding control of both championships, Wolff maintains that Mercedes cannot afford complacency over the remaining six events.

“You can DNF, you can crash out. It happens two times in a row and then suddenly what looked like a nice buffer is not anymore because you have six races to go,” Wolff stated. “So, in my opinion, we just need to ignore the points until it is mathematically not realistic anymore or not real anymore for them to win and until then just concentrate on each and every week and try to bring your best game.”

Before fully turning attention to 2027, Mercedes will introduce one more package. After negotiating the upcoming event in Baku, the team plans to run a suite of new components at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.

“I think we are bringing a solid upgrade in Malaysia,” Wolff told Sky Sports. “So, we got to survive another one in Baku and let's see, but sometimes it doesn't correlate with the road so well. So, I hope that it does and hopefully that puts us on par with the others in terms of upgrades but we never know.”
