Toyota Executes Strategic Masterclass to Secure Fuji 6 Hours Victory
In a race defined by shifting momentum and high-stakes tactical gambles, Toyota secured a narrow World Endurance Championship victory at the Fuji 6 Hours, overcoming a dominant performance from pre-race favourites, Alpine. The #8 Toyota TR010 Hybrid, driven by Ryo Hirakawa, Brendon Hartley, and Sebastien Buemi, claimed the top step of the podium following a decisive strategic move during a final Virtual Safety Car period.
Alpineâs Dominance and the Late-Race Turnaround
For much of the event, the Alpine A424 LMDh appeared set to repeat its previous year's success. The French manufacturer locked out the front row, with the #36 Alpine led by Jules Gounon and Ferdinand Habsburg maintaining a comfortable 1-2 position for a significant duration.
However, the race narrative shifted dramatically in the final hour. A heavy crash involving a Garage 59 McLaren in the LMGT3 class triggered a safety car, presenting a pivotal moment for the Hypercar contenders. While Alpine struggled with a slow pitstop that dropped the #36 car to fifth, Toyota and BMW opted to 'roll the dice.' The #8 Toyota executed a shorter stop, changing just one tyre, which catapulted them from seventh place directly into the lead.
Hirakawa Defends Against Late Charge
The strategic gamble paid dividends, though it did not guarantee an easy finish. Victor Martins, piloting the #36 Alpine, mounted a ferocious late-race fightback. After the restart with only 20 minutes remaining, Martins climbed from fourth to second, hunting down the leading Toyota.
Despite the intense pressure, the home-crowd hero Ryo Hirakawa demonstrated exceptional composure. He successfully held off Martins in the closing laps, crossing the line just 0.591s ahead of the Alpine to deliver Toyota its third victory of the season. This win marks a crucial moment in the championship, especially as teams navigate the intense competition seen in previous rounds like the Fuji 6 Hours: Toyota targets a tenth WEC victory where the title fight began to tighten.
Class Victories and Championship Implications
While Toyota celebrated in the Hypercar class, WRT claimed the LMGT3 honours. Augusto Farfus guided the #32 BMW M4 GT3 to victory after a brilliant charge in the final hour, overtaking the TF Sport Corvettes to secure the win.
In the Hypercar standings, despite a drive-through penalty for a VSC infringement, the #7 Toyota crew of de Vries, Kobayashi, and Conway managed to recover to eighth, helping to strengthen their position in the championship battle.
