Jack Doohan emerges as contender for 2027 Haas seat ahead of private Jerez test

The Formula 1 driver market is intensifying around Haas as the American outfit evaluates candidates for its 2027 seat. While Oliver Bearman is locked in for 2027, Esteban Ocon is likely to lose his drive after two disappointing seasons, creating a high-stakes battle among rival teams and their affiliated juniors.

Doohan's Jerez Test and Route Back to the Grid

Doohan raced just seven times for Alpine before being replaced by Franco Colapinto following the 2025 Miami Grand Prix. The 23-year-old Australian subsequently joined Haas as a reserve driver and remains determined to land a full-time seat.

With Haas “holding off” on finalizing their 2027 driver pairing, an upcoming private Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) outing at Jerez gives Doohan an opportunity to put himself in the shop window. A strong performance in the behind-closed-doors test could significantly aid his chances of replacing Ocon. Furthermore, Doohan’s family power—anchored by his father Mick Doohan’s legendary status in motorsport—could also bolster his bid.

Fierce Rivalry for the Vacant Haas Cockpit

Doohan still faces formidable opposition, as Haas faces a pivotal choice in the 2027 driver market between several competing interests:

• Rafael Camara: The Ferrari junior reportedly boasts the ‘best credentials’ among the candidates. Currently trailing Nikola Tsolov by seven points in the 2026 Formula 2 championship fight, the Brazilian also outpaced Bearman during a recent private test. Should Camara secure the F2 title, Ferrari will be eager to place him in F1. However, team partner Toyota is cautious about running two Ferrari juniors simultaneously.
• Leonardo Fornaroli: The McLaren-affiliated driver, who was left on the sidelines despite winning the 2025 F2 title, is reported to have an agreement in principle with Haas.
• Ryo Hirakawa: The Toyota-backed racer remains an alternative option, though his chances are currently viewed as unlikely.

With only a slim chance remaining for Ocon to retain his seat, Haas's delayed decision provides Doohan with a critical opening to prove his worth on track.
