Citroën chooses continuity for GEN4 challenge

Citroën Racing will retain Nick Cassidy and Jean-Éric Vergne for the 2026/27 Formula E season, giving the French squad an unchanged driver line-up for the championship’s first GEN4 campaign.

The announcement follows a promising debut season for Citroën, which sits fifth in the Teams’ Championship with 166 points. With two rounds of the 2025/26 season still to run, the team has already turned its attention to the technical and competitive demands of the next generation of electric single-seater racing.

The timing is significant. GEN4 is presented as the most ambitious step yet for Formula E, with performance figures that move the series decisively beyond its current benchmark. The car is expected to exceed 335kph, accelerate from 0-100kph in approximately 1.8 seconds and reach 200kph in 4.4 seconds. That last figure represents a 1.5-second improvement over its predecessor.

In race mode, GEN4 will deliver 50% more power than the current GEN3 Evo. In ATTACK MODE, output will rise to as much as 600kW, a 71% increase in base output over GEN3 Evo. The car is also projected to be an average of 10 seconds faster per lap than the GEN3 car in qualifying mode and will be the only single-seater race car with permanent all-wheel drive.

Cassidy and Vergne provide proven experience

Citroën’s response is to preserve a pairing it considers among the most consistent and formidable on the grid. Cassidy enters the London finale 42 points behind the lead in the Drivers’ Championship, with 104 points, four podiums and a race victory — Citroën’s first in Formula E — keeping his title hopes alive.

Vergne endured a difficult start to the season but has recently reaffirmed his quality with strong performances in Shanghai and Tokyo. His experience will be particularly valuable as the team works through the demands of developing and understanding a completely new car.

Cassidy said the relationship built within the team had created a strong foundation, adding that he was eager to continue developing GEN4 and unlock its potential once it reached the track. Vergne similarly described the new-generation project as a unique challenge and said he was confident the team could arrive at the start of Season 13 ready to fight immediately.

The championship picture remains finely balanced ahead of London. Mitch Evans is also expecting a “massive fight” for the Formula E title, underlining the intensity of the finale before GEN4 takes centre stage.
